We will be moving onto Geometry and I thought this would be a good starting point to see what the grade ones already know about 2D shapes. It turns out they know a lot already!
We started last week discussing what we thought honesty was and came to the conclusion that it comes down to telling the TRUTH and doing the right thing! We watched this cute video to help us better understand why we should be HONEST. Please continue the conversation at home with your child about the importance of being honest both at home and at school. We filled our bucket and celebrated by playing board games. Thank you to the students who brought in their board games. Not only did everyone have fun but they also had the opportunity to practise listening, turn taking and following specific instructions. Great job everyone! This week we read a book called A Weird Week by Gwen Peterman. It is one of my favourites. The students were asked to visualize an animal and represent their visualization on paper. Have a look! The children were given a problem and asked to show their thinking with pictures, numbers and words. Have a look to see how they did. Today in math our class worked on composing numbers while playing a game. I encouraged the children to say (4 and 3 is the same as 7) after rolling the dice and counting 4 on one and 3 on the other. Have fun playing with your child at home. Everyone loved it!!!!!! At home, read a book, but don't let your child see any of the pictures. Remind them to visualize as you read. Challenge them to draw a picture from the book. After, compare their illustration with the book. Together, compare the similarities and differences between the two.
We have been working on making TEXT TO SELF CONNECTIONS in class. Help your child make some at home too! At home listen to this short video and see if you can recognize your child's voice. The grade ones that participated did a great job and demonstrated a lot of COURAGE. Looking forward to sharing more over the course of our grade 1 year.
