On the evening of December 17th, the primary classes at Fieldcrest will be performing in our annual Holiday Concert. My class, along with Ms. Forrester's grade 1 class will be performing two songs. Please visit the link provided below (Holiday Concert Songs) so that your child can practise at home too. Stay tuned for more information.
The Songs Titles to practise are: Hello World and We Recycle Holiday Concert Songs We will be wrapping up our unit in Data Management this week so I thought it would be a good idea to focus our math talk on a graph. I was very impressed with our math talk today. Take note of all of the wonderful observations and connections to math the grade ones shared today. For the next 2 weeks starting on Monday, our school will be collecting items for the food bank. We will be placing them in boxes under the tree in the front foyer. We are also collecting toys. If you are interested in participating your generosity and thoughtfulness will be greatly appreciated by those in need during this holiday season. Today the grade ones had fun sorting socks. We sorted them in a variety of ways such as socks with: stripes, pictures and socks that were plain. This is something that you can continue to do at home. Have your child pick an item, sort their item and ask them to explain to you their sorting rule. You can challenge them by doing the same thing and ask them to identify your sorting rule. Orders are due this coming November 20th. No cash please! Make your cheque payable to Scholastic Canada.

Prodigy Math Game - Quick-Start Guide What is Prodigy? Prodigy is a free, Pokemon-style math game that has been proven to improve student scores and confidence! It is aligned to the Ontario curriculum for grades 1-6, and features content from each of the five major strands. Prodigy was designed with three primary goals in mind: 1. To create deep engagement so students double their math practice time at home. 2. To equip teachers with reports and assessment tools to inform their instruction. 3. To provide curriculum aligned content for free, regardless of a student’s demographic.
How do I play? In Prodigy, children create and customize their very own wizard avatar as they progress through a number of curriculum-aligned math skills. What about Parents? One of the biggest benefits of Prodigy is that children can access their Prodigy account from anywhere with an internet connection. Parents can also involve themselves in their children’s education with a free or premium Prodigy account. Today, during our math talk we learned about how symbols can be used to represent an amount. This pictograph uses a symbol that represents 10 toys. You can find more graphs like this on Google images. At home, continue to interpret data found on a variety of graphs (bar and pictograph).

Link to: Cosmic Kids Yoga Ask your child to explain what they are supposed to do while visiting each literacy centre. This might give you some ideas of things that you can do at home to reinforce what your child is doing and learning at school. Everyone is loving our home made play dough. Thank you to all parents who have signed up to make play dough for our classroom this year. Currently we have May and June up for grabs if you are interested in signing up. Doughnations are always appreciated! If possible making 2 -3 batches for your month would be awesome that way there is enough to go around amongst 4 students visiting the play dough literacy centre.
This order is due on November 20th. I will only be accepting cheques this year. Cheques can be made payable to Scholastic Canada. Happy Reading!
Here are some examples of how students in our class sorted their objects today during our math lesson in our new unit in Data Management. Can you identify their sorting rules? Try sorting objects at home and see if your family members can guess your sorting rules.

I am sad that tomorrow is our last day together. I can't believe it! I will miss each and every one of you but will look forward to hearing all about your summer adventures when I see you in the fall. It has been an amazing year filled with lots of learning, fun and adventure! Be sure to have a fun filled summer! Be safe and see you in September. Today our class had the opportunity to play a board game of their choice. Thank you to Lucas, Brooke and Cassandra for bringing in your games. It was really nice to see everyone playing, working together and best of all having a whole lot of FUN! Everyone did a wonderful job working well with others and showing that they can collaborate with their peers. Great job grade 2's! Today we filled our classroom bucket! As our reward, students have been asked to bring in a board game that they can play on Monday.
In math, we have been working on telling time to the hour, half hour and quarter hour. I have noticed a lot of improvement with each student becoming more confident in their ability to tell the time as well as show the time with the hands on the clock. Continuing with this over the summer months would be beneficial! Analog Clock Digital Clock We received our last letter from our penpals at Chris Hadfield this week. The entire class was buzzing with excitement as they read their letters. It is really hard to believe that we only have 9 school days left! I hope everyone is looking forward to our pen pal meet and greet this week. Let's cross our fingers that Mother Nature cooperates with us. |
