We are learning about using non-standard tools to measure with. We will be using the yarn as a reference guide when comparing how many cubes tall we are. Eventually, we will be looking at our results and comparing the difference between height in cubes versus height in centimetres. I wonder which unit (standard or non-standard) will have the higher number for each student? I hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday that was filled with lots of fun, time with family and friends. It was so nice to see everyone today. I am looking forward to the year 2015 and what it has in store for us. Please reference the tabs above (Calendar and Newsletters) for the most up to date information. Today we started our school wide DPA ( Daily Physical Activity) where grade 8 students lead specific exercises to promote being active. This will happen on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings for 10 minutes. I also incorporate DPA throughout the week and a big hit in our class is Just Dance. A lot of the students in our class are very familiar with Just Dance, so I encourage them to challenge themselves to pick activities at home that will encourage them to be active as well. Keep fit and have fun!
We will be having a class party this coming Friday (December 19th) to celebrate before we all leave for the holidays. If you would like to send in a special treat for your child to share, it would be very much appreciated. Healthy snacks are always welcome. We have 20 students in our class. In our Daily Language program. students will occasionally be asked to circle a noun, verb or adjective in one of their five questions. We continue to review the definition for each (noun, verb and adjective). It would be beneficial to continue to review this with your child at home.
Click on the link to try this out at home: Parts of Speech Today our class had a lot of fun! We made reindeer headbands and Magic Reindeer Food to go along with it. Be sure to sprinkle it in your front yard on Christmas eve. It is a reindeer favourite! Please encourage and assist your child with their skip counting. They need to be able to skip count by 2s, 5s, 10s, and 25s to 200. From what I have observed in class, skip counting by 25s seems to be the most challenging. You can use quarters to reinforce this skill at home. Also, they need to be able to count backwards by 10s from 100 and 1s from 50. Take advantage during car rides as you run errands during this busy time of year! Today our class, along with Mrs. Switzer's class got together to celebrate all of the diversity we have between both of our classrooms. Wow! It was so amazing to learn about all of the different languages that our students speak besides English. We watched this short video today before breaking off into groups. Students worked collaboratively to write Merry Christmas in a variety of different languages. They also had an opportunity to make flags for a variety of different countries. The smiles on their faces said it all. They were all so excited and engaged in their learning! If you are coming to our primary concert next week (We Can Move the World) on Thursday December 18th at 6:30pm, please take a moment to look for all of their hard work as it will be displayed throughout the gym. Our students had a lot of fun! What a great learning opportunity to learn from one another. Throughout the day students will have opportunities to check in and identify what ZONE they are in at that particular time.
The Four Zones: The Red Zone is used to describe extremely heightened states of alertness and intense emotions. A person may be elated or experiencing anger, rage, explosive behavior, devastation, or terror when in the Red Zone. A person is described as “out of control” if in the Red Zone. The Yellow Zone is also used to describe a heightened state of alertness and elevated emotions; however, one has some control when they are in the Yellow Zone. A person may be experiencing stress, frustration, anxiety, excitement, silliness, the wiggles, or nervousness when in the Yellow Zone. The Green Zone is used to describe a calm state of alertness. A person may be described as happy, focused, content, or ready to learn when in the Green Zone. This is the zone where optimal learning occurs. The Blue Zone is used to describe low states of alertness, such as when one feels sad, tired, sick, or bored. The Zones can be compared to traffic signs. When given a green light or in the Green Zone, one is “good to go”. A yellow sign means be aware or take caution, which applies to the Yellow Zone. A red light or stop sign means stop, and when one is the Red Zone, this often is the case. The Blue Zone can be compared to the rest area signs where one goes to rest or re-energize. All of the zones are expected at one time or another, but the curriculum focuses on teaching the students how to figure out what zone is expected based on the environment and people around them. Our class will be performing this song at our upcoming We Can Move the World concert on December 18th at 6:30 pm in our school gym. Watch and enjoy! One of my students had been on our class blog and mentioned that I had said I was going to send home Race to 200 by the end of last week. Unfortunately I forgot, but I am thankful for the reminder! Game board and rules will be sent home tomorrow. Sorry for the delay. |
